This work relates to baroque images of “Vanitas” in still life paintings, originally a moral genre transformed over time and mannerism to decorative bourgeois interior décors; the passage of the skull from a symbol of Memento Mori, a contemplative image, to a meaningless design, losing its metaphorical power in the process.
